OUR SUMMIT
The Koorie Youth Summit is the largest gathering in Victoria created for and by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young people aged 18-28 years. Since 2014, KYC has hosted the event to create a safe space for young mob to gather from around the state to connect with each other, discuss what is important to us, be proud, learn, share and celebrate our culture.
Each year, our Summit centres around a theme, and features deadly speakers and yarning circles and workshops. Previous speakers have included Uncle Archie Roach, Adam Briggs, Adam Goodes, Aunty Di Kerr, Tunchai Redvers, as well as members of our Executive and deadly young people.

2024 Koorie Youth Summit - Ancestor's Footsteps, Young Voices, Empowering Futures
This three-day conference welcomed Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young people aged between 18-28 years who live permanently in Victoria. The Summit draws participants from regional, rural, and metro communities across the state, offering a dedicated space for connection, growth, and empowerment.
Over 100 youth delegates participated this year, marking a significant return to Naarm/Melbourne, focusing on outcomes and advocacy for our community’s future. Attendees heard from prominent Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander leaders and advocates, shaping the path forward for our young mob. Additionally, KYC provided delegates with enriching cultural and social programs that celebrate the resilience of our people.
Meet the Artist
My name is Teagan, I am a proud Kamilaroi woman, illustrator, artist and graphic designer. I have lived and worked on Wurundjeri land for almost 10 years and warmly call it my home. In 2020, after returning from overseas, I was yearning to reconnect with myself and my community. I made art again for the first time in a long time and have been using it to tell stories ever since. Inspiration comes from many places, my community, my experiences, my family and the world around me, both natural and made. I’m passionate about telling contemporary stories of family, travel and connecting to Country and hope that by capturing these moments through my art they may be preserved for years to come.
Artwork Story
This piece has been made specifically for KYC to capture the 2024 Koorie Youth Summit theme “Ancestor’s Footsteps, Young Voices, Empowering Futures”. Firstly the centre circle has been used to represent a strong foundation. Within the circle, are layers of time and the footprints of our ancestors. Sprouting outwards are empowered futures, each unique, and all beautiful. These futures have been arranged at varying heights to emote sound waves, representing young voices. The vibrant colour story of KYC has been used to retain organisational consistency and recognition. Not only do I believe that this piece captures the 2024 Koorie Youth Summit theme perfectly, but also embodies KYC’s values of respect, accountability and youth leadership.
To ensure accessibility, KYC offers support for young people traveling from regional and rural areas, striving to create an inclusive and safe environment for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander youth with diverse lived and cultural experiences.

About Our Theme – Ancestor’s Footsteps, Young Voices, Empowering Futures:
The theme for the 2024 Koorie Youth Summit, Ancestor’s Footsteps, Young Voices, Empowering Futures, combines the notions of following our Ancestor’s footsteps, paying homage to all of those that have come before us and their advocacy for the rights and representation of future generations. To us, as young, proud Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people now using our voices to do the same, we look to shape and determine where to next for us as well as what we want for our mobs moving forward. We will listen, heal, share, and celebrate each other so that we can empower each other into the future.
